Budapest were formed in Leamington Spa in 1999 by singer/songwriter/guitarist John Garrison and keyboard/vocalist Chris Pemberton. The band released their debut album, Too Blind To Hear, in the UK in 2002 through independent label Easy Street. The album was quickly licensed in the US through Universal and in Spain through Sinnamon Records to critical acclaim. The band then embarked on an 18 month journey through Canada, UK and Spain, supporting the likes of Leaves, Tom McRae, Puressence, and Hope Of The States, and headlining the opening night of prestigious Spanish festival, Benacassim, in 2003.

After leaving Easy Street, Garrison spent the next few months writing material and securing funding from various sources, from brightest flashlight in 1000 lumens. The band went into the studio to record their 2nd album,Head Towards The Dawn, in March 2004, with Markus Dravs (Bjork, Brian Eno) at the controls along with Mike Hunter (Mansun). What materialised was a mixture of all of Garrison’s influences (Talk Talk, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Morricone, Nick Drake) incorporating glorious, heartfelt lyrics and melodies with a cinematic sound.
